Skoka Waterfall: A Hidden Gem in Teteven, Bulgaria

Skoka Waterfall is nestled in the charming mountain town of Teteven in Bulgaria and it offers a serene and picturesque escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Since our six week stay in Teteven we've had the pleasure of exploring this hidden gem multiple times and would highly recommend it to others. Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast or simply looking for a peaceful nature retreat, Skoka Waterfall is a must-visit.

A Journey into Nature

Our visits to Skoka Waterfall begin with a short 7-minute drive up the winding mountain roads from the town center, followed by an easy 15-minute walk through the lush Bulgarian forest. The trail is surrounded by vibrant greenery, making the journey as enjoyable as the destination.

Along your hike, you'll be accompanied by the soothing sounds of free-flowing forest streams and the sight of beautiful, massive tree roots that intertwine with rocks along the path. There is also a striking rock wall, ideal for rock climbing, though it has yet to be developed. Once you arrive at the waterfall, you'll find seating areas and even space to cook a BBQ, making it a perfect spot for a family outing.

Our Motivation for Visiting

We didn't come to Teteven specifically to see Skoka Waterfall. As a little family traveling full-time, we chose Bulgaria for its lower cost of living compared to most of Europe and its rock climbing opportunities. Teteven, with its beautiful mountain scenery and welcoming community, was the ideal place for us to stay. With not much else to do in town, I discovered Skoka Waterfall—a mere five-minute drive from the town center—and it quickly became one of our favorite spots, especially in the afternoon during summer for a cool-off and a quick dip.

Getting There

Driving your own car is the best way to reach Skoka Waterfall. We hired a car from Sofia and found the journey convenient, with parking available at the base of the trail. More information on hiring a car in Bulgaria can be found here. Sometimes a small shop near the parking area opens up, offering refreshments, fresh condiments, and local honey. Accessing the hike to the waterfall is free, and we found not many tourists visit, mainly locals, which adds to the experience.

Family-Friendly Adventure

Traveling with our 19-month-old daughter, we found Skoka Waterfall to be an ideal afternoon adventure. The weather during our summer visits was lovely and pleasant, with the majority of the trail being shaded, providing a cool escape even on sunny days. We can only imagine how beautiful the area would be in winter, possibly covered in snow.

What stood out to us the most about Skoka Waterfall was the peaceful and tranquil walk in. The huge, beautiful tree roots, the free-flowing water, and the sounds of the forest create a magical atmosphere. The hike itself is of an easy grade, making it accessible for most people.

Exploring Teteven

While Teteven is a small town with limited attractions, it boasts a strong community vibe which we love. English is sometimes limited, and a reflection of the town's older demographic. Despite its size, there are several places to eat, drink, and shop, all of which have been delightful experiences. We've enjoyed our time here immensely, soaking in the local culture and natural beauty.

Practical Tips for Your Visit

  • What to Wear: Comfortable hiking attire is recommended. Bring water, a hat, and snacks. Although the hike is mostly easy, one small part of the trail is a bit sketchy and weather permitting I can see how it could get worse.

  • Swimming: There is an opportunity to swim when you reach the waterfall, the water is shallow, and very cold, but incredibly refreshing.

  • Rock Climbing Potential: There is a large wall along the trail that is perfect for rock climbing, though unfortunately no routes are bolted yet. We really hope someone develops it soon!

  • Dining Options: On the way back to town, there's a nice pub where you can enjoy a meal and beer. In Teteven, there are also a few pleasant places to eat and drink, each offering a lovely experience.
