Visiting the Dubai Frame: A Golden Gateway Between Old and New Dubai

During our five-day stay at the Palm in Dubai, we couldn't help but notice the Dubai Frame every time we drove past. Standing tall and shimmering in gold, this incredible structure caught our eye, and we decided it was well worth a visit during our time in the city.

Visiting the Dubai Frame: A Golden Gateway Between Old and New Dubai

Ascending the Frame: A Crowded Journey

After starting our day at the Museum of the Future (check out our experience here), we headed to The Dubai Frame, it was about a 10-minute taxi ride or around 5km. We'd heard it wasn’t as busy as the Future Museum and didn’t require advanced bookings, but by the time we walked in and through the initial Old Dubai section, there was still a decent line for the elevator. It was quite crowded, with people eager to get ahead in line. However, the ride back down was a treat as you can come down whenever you're ready and it was just my mum and I in the elevator, giving us a clear view of everything!

The View: A Contrast Between Old and New Dubai

From the top, the view is something special. On one side, you look upon Old Dubai, which wasn’t quite what I expected. On the other side, you’re met with New Dubai—modern, sophisticated, and a lot of "WOW" factor. Everything just looks bigger, better and more impressive than anywhere else in the world. The biggest attraction that stands out to the right is the Burj Khalifa which is the tallest building in the world and definitely not something that you see every day. In front of it is the famous Dubai Fountain and to the right the Dubai Mall.

Walking on Glass

One of the highlights of the experience is walking across the glass floor at the top. It’s made of smart glass, so it appears opaque until you step on it, at which point it turns clear. It gave us a bit of a fright initially! But it was something else to look straight down 150m to the bottom of the Frame as we walked across.

The Pre-Frame Museum: A Simple Start

Before going up, there’s a small museum exhibit at the base of The Frame. It’s a simple walk-through, but I enjoyed taking my time there before waiting in line to board the elevator.

Timing and Recommendations

We visited mid-morning, which was fine, but I can imagine The Frame would be particularly stunning at dawn, dusk, or even at night. If you’re into sightseeing, it’s definitely worth checking out. We always try to arrive early to beat the crowds, which is a good tip for this attraction as well although it may not necessarily give you the best viewing experience as Dubai can be quite hazey.

Practical Tips for Visiting the Dubai Frame

  • Cost: The Frame is more affordable than the Future Museum, with tickets around $25 per person. We booked through our hotel, but you can also use tour companies like Viator.

  • Transportation: We took a taxi there and back, which was inexpensive and easy. Be cautious when leaving, as private taxi drivers may approach you—stick to the government-run taxis.

  • Nearby Attractions: We made a day of it and started at the Museum of the Future before heading to The Dubai Frame. Then we headed to the Dubai Mall to see the Dubai Fountain and Burj Khalifa. These attractions are all relatively close, making it convenient to visit them in one go if you’re up for it - here's where you can get tickets!.

Final Thoughts

If you're someone who enjoys sightseeing, the Dubai Frame and Museum of the Future are worth a visit. Just be prepared for the usual tourist crowd. It's also worth noting that they offer to take your photo as you enter. My mum decided to purchase the digital copy, which was imposed on the Frame itself (pictured above), though it was quite pricey at 100 AED, but also to be expected as a standard tourist experience. There are some snacks and other opportunities to purchase at the top of The Frame, but as you can imagine they will come with a similar tourist price tag.

After descending, there’s a "Future Dubai" section showing a film. We walked through since we’d just come from the Museum of the Future, but many visitors stayed to watch. It’s a nice touch to end the experience.
