Today was just one of those days.

You can plan, plan, and plan some more, thinking you’ve done everything right for a smooth run — and still, it just doesn’t go your way. I’m not going to pretend that every day is sunshine, rainbows, and jelly. The reality? Some days are just hard. And that’s okay.

Dad carrying baby gear and climbing equipment on a trail through the Thai jungle

Picture this: Jacob walking into the jungle in Thailand, fully loaded with climbing gear and a baby cot balanced on the back of the scooter. We’ve done all the things — packed the snacks, the gear, the sleep stuff — lugged it to the crag and set up. Then… it rains. Or Kaia has a meltdown for no clear reason. Or some other small disaster unfolds.

There have been moments where we’ve looked at each other and muttered: Why do we bother? Maybe we should have waited until she was older. Maybe it’s all just too hard.

But I’ve come to believe that it’s these messy, unpredictable days that make the good ones even sweeter. The ones where everything goes sideways remind you how lucky you are to be out there at all.

Yesterday, we had to bail because of the rain. If the cot gets wet, well — game over. But today started off better. We arrived, got set up, and it was quiet. Jacob got a couple of climbs in. Just as we were about to put Kaia down for her nap… a huge group of people arrived out of nowhere. Loud, chaotic, and suddenly everywhere.

“For f***’s sake,” we muttered to each other. “Every time.”

Do we pack up? Head home? It would have meant a disrupted nap and no climbing for Jacob. Instead, we took a breath. Moved her cot under a shady tree. Crossed our fingers.

And you know what? She slept.

As I sat there, watching the light filter through the jungle canopy, I felt so grateful. We were out climbing in Thailand, Kaia was napping under a tree, and Jacob was back on the wall. Despite everything, it worked out.

I love coming back and writing these reflections. They’re not always glamorous stories, but they’re honest. We could have let it all unravel — let the noise and the effort and the exhaustion take over. But instead, we leaned in. Let go of the expectations. And made the most of the moment.

Because these little moments — the ones that almost break you — they also build you. They pave the way for patience, resilience, and a hell of a lot of appreciation.

We really are so lucky to be here.

Til next time,

R
